As rough and rugged as the outback of his homeland, the Australian Cattle dog is a capable non nonsense dog breed. They do not enjoy a sedentary life and for this reason are not often seen in the city. All but the most dedicated can find them difficult to keep up to.

The Australian Cattle Dog is a protective and courageous dog. They are alert and wary of strangers, and make an excellent home protector. They are an extremely serious, intelligent and determined breed, one that will never waver in any responsibility they have been trained for. They are independent and free thinking and need a capable experienced pack leader who will train and socialize them from puppy hood. Training should never be heavy handed as they are a breed who will retaliate.

For those who have the time, energy and dedication, the Australian Cattle Dog will reward them with a companion who offers unquestionable devotion and loyalty that outshines many other breeds. The Australian Cattle Dog is also known as the Blue Heeler.

CHILDREN: They are a fine choice for homes with children as long as they are brought in to the household as a puppy. Adults may have a hard time dealing with youngsters if they do not have experience with them.

OTHER ANIMALS: The Australian Cattle Dog does well with other household pets and farm animals they have been raised around. Due to their protective instincts they can be aggressive with strange animals, especially any coming on to their property.

EXERCISE: The Australian Cattle Dog is a hardy agile herding dog, capable of working large areas for long hours. They need to be kept busy to keep them both mentally and physically healthy. They are a working dog first, a companion dog second. Owner’s need to dedicate at least 2-3 hours daily to their exercise needs. Australian Cattle Dogs make great jogging and bicycling companions, excellent hikers and campers and excel at many of the organized dog trails and competitions. They also make superb search and rescue dogs

HEALTH: The Australian Cattle Dog is a robust breed, not given to a lot of health issues. The biggest concern is congenital deafness. Studies have shown that 2-3% of Australian Cattle Dogs are completely deaf and 14-15% are deaf in one ear. They are also susceptible to hip dysphasia and PRA. Pet owners should buy from show or pet lines as working lines tend to be far more intense and serious.

APPEARANCE/COAT CARE: The Australian Cattle Dog is a sturdy medium-sized dog breed. They weigh between 35-45 pounds and measures 17-20 inches at their withers. They have a short coat which comes in blue mottled or red speckled. Coat care is easy, a quick brushing once a week keeps them neat and tidy.
