Stanley Coren is a psychology professor at the University of British Columbia. He surveyed various dog trainers and came out with the list of dog breeds that are most intelligent or smart, excellent working dogs, above average working dogs, average working/obedience intelligence, fair working/obedience intelligence, and lowest degree of working/obedience intelligence. The standards of intelligence of these dogs were evaluated on the basis of the following two parameters:

a. Understanding new commands

b. Obeying the first command

Intelligent or the smartest dog breeds understands new commands in less than 5 repetitions and obeys first command 95% of the time or even better than that. These are the top 5 brightest dog breeds.

1. Border Collie:

Border Collie tops the list of most intelligent or smartest breed of dog. These dogs are very energetic, intelligent, alert acrobatic, responsive and athletic. Border collie is also called as the most workaholic dog in the entire breeds of dogs. These breed of dogs require more than just a morning walk. These breed of dogs mingle well with people, but a little aloof when comes to strangers. Border Collies are considered to be excellent companions. If you wish to keep a Border Collie as your pet, ensure you are energetic to cope up with the energy levels of this breed of dog.

2. Poodle:

Poodle is the second most intelligent breed of dog. Do you think beauty and brains don’t go together? If yes, poodle will make you change this opinion. 4. Golden Retriever:

These are one of the most popular breed of dogs in the United States and takes the fourth spot among the most intelligent or the brightest breeds of dogs. The intelligence of this dog suits it to take a variety of roles like being a guide to the visually-challenged people, hearing dog for those who are hard of hearing, hunting dog, etc. Their origin dates back to 1800s in the Scottish Highlands. Choose this dog breed as your pet only if you are ready to provide daily exercises. The outer coat of Golden Retriever is water repellant and therefore used to rescue birds or animals from water; this coating requires regular brushing as they shed seasonally. They also acts as surrogate mothers for other species.
