Having a dog is not just a game or just a hobby. You also need to know the responsibilities you need to do when you have one. One of these responsibilities is grooming. Even if your dog doesn't have that too much fur, you still need to groom them. And here are the steps you need to follow when grooming your dogs.

  • Step 1: First step in grooming is bathing. You need to bathe your dogs weekly or others need 2-3 times a week of regular bathing. Usually, puppies are afraid to take a bath especially if it's their first time. But don't worry, they'll get used to it just don't force them. Also remember in bathing, you must avoid the shampoo or conditioner to get on their eyes or their eyes may irritate.
  • Step 2: After bathing, you need to make sure to dry off your dog's fur especially if it's a shih tzu, maltese or those breeds who are high maintenance in grooming. Remember to comb their hair while drying off their coat so that your dog's coat won't get tangled.
  • Step 3: Just like us humans, dogs need to brush their teeth. So one step needed in grooming your dogs is to brush their teeth 5 to 7 times a week. One reason is to prevent them having bad breath and there are some breeds that may encounter dental problems.
  • Step 4: Nails Clipping. Don't forget to trim your dog nails. A weekly trimming is good so that you can prevent getting scratch by your dogs.
  • Step 5: Brushing: A regular brushing will help keep your  dog's hair in good condition by removing dirt and spreading natural oils throughout their coat. It is a way of preventing tangles. And during brushing, it is the best time to check for fleas.
  • Step 6: (For other breeds) Some breeds has loose facial skin or what you called wrinkles, such as pugs. To prevent dirt and bacteria from causing your dog to have irritation and infection, you need to clean the folds with a damp cotton or a cloth. You need to dry thoroughly the areas between the folds because bacteria and germs likes to stay on wet places.

While, if you own a dog  who has long ears, you should be able to check them weekly. You need to remove wax and dirt from their ears with a cotton ball that is moistened with water or mineral oil. You also need to remove any excess hair leading into the ear canal. There are special hair removers that allows to carefully pull one strand at a time.

Before doing some major grooming, remember to ask those who are experienced in this kind of responsibility like your vet or a groomer. You need to ask them the best things to remember when grooming your dog. But if you are not that confident in some major grooming then let the groomer do their work and just take those grooming steps that can be done easily even if you are at home.
